Artist Bio - Canan Aralongun-Cartwright
Born in Turkey in 1972, Canan’s creative journey has been shaped by transformation, resilience, and discovery. Her early professional life was rooted in finance, where she worked as a personal banker until the 2001 financial crisis prompted a major shift in direction. She later joined Emirates Airlines, a role that expanded her global perspective and ultimately led her to The Bahamas.
In 2005, Canan relocated to The Bahamas after marrying her Bahamian husband. While raising her son, now sixteen, creativity remained a quiet but persistent presence in her life. In 2021, she enrolled in an online gouache course—an unplanned decision that marked the beginning of a dedicated painting practice.
Since then, Canan has continued to explore painting as both process and expression, developing her artistic voice through consistent practice and curiosity. Her work reflects a life shaped by movement, cultural exchange, and personal reinvention, offering a perspective informed by lived experience and evolving identity.
Artist Statement
I am an artist based in Nassau working in acrylic and mixed media, drawing inspiration from the vibrant culture, music, and natural beauty of The Bahamas. My work is colorful and whimsical, guided by an intuitive love for bold, bright hues and the uplifting energy they carry. Color is central to my practice—it is how I communicate joy, movement, and emotional warmth.
Bahamian music and Junkanoo culture deeply influence my work, particularly my portraits and scenes that celebrate rhythm, celebration, and collective spirit. Through layered textures and expressive color, I aim to capture the vitality and freedom found in these cultural traditions, honoring both their visual impact and their emotional resonance.
Art entered my life at a moment when I needed it most, becoming a source of comfort, healing, and renewal. Creating allows me to reconnect with joy and presence, and that feeling is what I hope to share with others. My paintings are invitations—to feel uplifted, to pause, and to experience the playful, life-affirming energy that art can offer.
