Paulette Mortimer
Artist Statement
My work explores perception, memory, and emotional connection through black-and-white infrared photography and encaustic wax art. Drawn to infrared for its unpredictability and heightened contrast, I use the medium to transform familiar landscapes into surreal, contemplative spaces—where dark skies, luminous foliage, and texture invite viewers to slow down and look differently.
Much of my inspiration is rooted in my late father’s love of music, nature, travel, and architecture, as well as personal reflection and meditation. I am interested in creating images that evoke feeling rather than documentation, allowing each piece to spark its own emotional response. By occasionally combining photography with encaustic wax, I embrace process, experimentation, and the quiet balance between control and surprise.
Ultimately, my work seeks to offer a renewed appreciation of place, memory, and stillness—revealing beauty in the unexpected.
Artist Bio
Paulette A. N. Mortimer is a Bahamian visual artist and fine art photographer born in Nassau, The Bahamas. She holds degrees in French and Business, including an MBA and a Master Certificate in International Business. Her artistic journey began during her college years in Miami, where she was introduced to experimental photographic processes that shaped her lifelong practice.
Mortimer is best known for her black-and-white infrared photography, a medium she has worked with since 1998. Drawn to its element of surprise and emotional depth, her work features surreal contrasts—dark skies, luminous foliage, and heightened textures—that invite viewers to see familiar landscapes anew. Inspired by her late father’s love of music, nature, travel, and architecture, her images aim to evoke reflection and emotional connection. In recent years, she has expanded her practice to include encaustic wax art, sometimes blending it with photography as a meditative process.
An eclectic and multidisciplinary artist, Mortimer has exhibited in solo and group shows internationally, participated in over twenty trade shows, and been featured in Inspiration: International Art Book, Vol. 4, selected from more than 3,500 applicants worldwide. She is the owner of Third Eye Artworks & Collectibles, located in downtown Nassau, where her work is available in both fine art and functional forms.
