Artist Bio - Keith Wisdom

Born on the island of New Providence in Nassau, The Bahamas, Keith Wisdom is a visual artist whose work is deeply rooted in performance, culture, and the expressive energy of Junkanoo. A retired stage director and television producer, Keith brings a lifetime of theatrical storytelling to his visual art practice.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Drama and Theatre from Minnesota State University, Mankato, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Performance and a Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the University of Georgia in Athens. After a successful career spanning theatre and corporate advertising, Keith answered what he describes as a “persistent urge” to draw and paint, transitioning fully into visual art in the early 1990s.

Keith’s Junkanoo-inspired paintings are known for their vivid color, intricate detail, and cultural resonance. His work has been collected and exhibited throughout The Bahamas, the United States, Canada, and Hungary. His first solo exhibition took place at the Long-Branch Gateway Gallery on Paradise Island, followed by numerous group exhibitions over the years.

A pivotal moment in Keith’s life came after the loss of his position as a theatre company manager, which sparked a period of intense creative focus. During this time, painting became both his emotional anchor and primary livelihood—an experience that continues to inform the depth and authenticity of his work.

Now based in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Keith continues to evolve his Caribbean-inspired visual language. His most notable exhibition to date is his first U.S. solo show at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. Through his work, Keith Wisdom captures the rhythm, movement, and spirit of Junkanoo, translating cultural memory into bold and enduring visual narratives.

Artist Statement

My painting process begins with an abrupt, often joyful moment of awareness—an internal spark that feels both conscious and instinctive. It is this experience, fleeting yet powerful, that compels me to create. I paint directly from the soul, allowing emotion and intuition to guide each mark rather than preconceived outcomes.

The act of painting is deeply satisfying and expansive, offering a sense of limitless possibility. In these moments, the canvas becomes a space for discovery, where feeling takes precedence over control. While the experience is often filled with wonder, it is not always comfortable. At times, the urge to create feels like an intense thirst—an unrelenting need to translate inner sensation into form.

Through this process, my work becomes both a response and a release: a way of honoring the moment that initiated it and embracing the vulnerability that comes with creative urgency. Painting, for me, is not simply an act of making—it is a necessity, a dialogue between impulse, emotion, and expression.
